Athens, Ohio is credited as a small town with a college presence, but it is also known for sticking to its roots and providing a ton of interesting small, local businesses. The businesses range but the most notorious are the Athens' coffee shops. Every time anyone walks uptown, they will pass a glorious amount of coffee shops, all different and special in their own way, but all Athens based. One of the more notorious Athens' coffee shops, is an intriguing coffee shop called Donkey.
Donkey Coffee&Espresso is a little different than the majority of the coffee shops because it is not on the main strip of campus. Donkey is located on Washington and if you didn't know about it before you could miss it easily. Missing Donkey is surely a crime, considering it is one of the coolest coffee shops I have ever experienced. The instant you walk in, you are greeted by the people working behind the counter and you automatically feel welcome. The colors of the shop are relaxing and intriguing especially when you add the mixture of the fantastic artwork and photography that graces the walls that give the place a college-vibe. The customers are majority college students, ranging from the ones studying or the students who are trying to catch a quick study break. On the weekends the customers could be people relaxing from a harsh week and winding down to some music or poetry because donkey has weekend entertainment both Friday and Saturday. There was an even a meeting going on in one of the multiple sitting areas. This is the kind of place to go for any reason but above all to enjoy an amazing cup of coffee.
Speaking of amazing cup of coffee, Donkey has been voted the best coffee in Ohio. Both Cameron and I can vouch this is a true statement and not just because the atmosphere. Not only is their coffee top rated, but they are also known for only selling local treats. They provide a range variety of sweets and food that are provided by other local businesses or just simply the people around Athens. This is definitely a special addition to the Donkey experience.
Not only does Donkey support the community by providing locally made food but it also has a history of standing up and fighting for the community. This is shown even on the website where they have a special place just for social justice. They believe in supporting organizations that fight for the community of Athens everyday.
All in all, Donkey is a pretty sweet coffee shop. It goes far and beyond a regular coffee shop and takes the fact it is a local business serious. I believe this coffee shop is one of the best in Athens for all the reasons I have stated above, and I strongly urge all readers to go and explore.
