Ohio University and their fests have received recognition
all over the country. A plethora of students from
different colleges are starting to show up and party along with friends. The participation of these fests is growing rapidly
and so is the presence of the police and volunteers. Last weekend, Ohio University paid 200
volunteers 50 dollars each to roam around Mill Fest and keep things safe
(Zellner, 2012). The University is
taking all precautions to eliminate the chance of dangerous situations and bad
publicity.
The
University is clearly taking substantial steps to get rid of the party school
image that has overshadowed the schools achievements. With heightened security at the fests by Ohio
University, how might this change the OU student’s outlook on fests and the
University? Ohio University has a large
responsibility with student safety and the integrity of the school. “OU has budgeted $25,000 for this weekend’s
fests” said Katie Quaranta (Zellner,
2012). OU students seem to understand the clear
message put forth by the University and arrests were down from prior
fests. Students are the heart and soul of
OU and the fests, along with Halloween, is what there known by. "We spend upwards of $100,000 for Halloween to keep things safe. If it
helps reduce the risk, then it’s worth the cost,” Lombardi said (Zellner 2012). However, spending money to help with safety
has not diminished the schools party reputation in the slightest.
The
issue of safety at fests has reemerged year after year and will probably never
go away. There might but probably isn’t a
solution that the students and University will both agree on. The use of volunteers by Ohio University seemed
to have helped with Mill Fest; also, the students did not complain about the
extra precautions taken; yet? This might
be a future solution to the fests but will cost the University a pretty penny.
