Fests - Should they Continue? - Dan Roy and George Peck

A big debate this spring at Ohio University and the city of Athens has been the controversy surrounding Palmer fest. After the infamous house fire, many local residents have called the university to take action. They do not like the negative image it puts on Athens and the University. Of course, many are also concerned about the safety of all those in attendance at these fests.

This also is not the first time that fire has been an issue in a fest but, like a great samurai sword, all things beautiful are forged in fire. I myself, George Peck, was in attendance at this event and at no time felt in danger. A fire like this could have been just as likely as if someone forgetfully left a pizza in the oven, mistakes happen, it just so happens that this was in close proximity of another incident.

These fests provide something that attract many things to Athens. Not all of it is entirely positive but most is. It brings an opportunity for shops and stores to make more money than what they are used to, especially those in the business of providing alcohol. It employs and provides jobs for citizens of Athens to help in this event. It also attracts students to come to this school because as many know, drinking is something many students do, and this provides a wonderful, and inviting environment for them to do so. These fests have been here for years, and in our eyes, will stay for many more.
